A hyperbaric chamber is a sealed enclosure that holds air pressure above normal atmospheric pressure while the person inside breathes concentrated oxygen. The pressure is the working part: it dissolves substantially more oxygen into blood plasma than breathing at sea level. OxyRenew operates a private hard-shell chamber at up to 2.0 ATA in West Hollywood, serving the greater Los Angeles area.
Chamber pressure is measured in atmospheres absolute (ATA). 1.0 ATA is normal pressure at sea level, and 2.0 ATA is double that. The amount of oxygen that dissolves in blood plasma is governed by Henry's law: the more pressure a gas is under, the more of it dissolves in a liquid.
Hemoglobin is already near its ceiling at normal pressure, but plasma has no such limit, so raising the pressure inside a chamber keeps forcing more oxygen into it. That dissolved fraction is what a session raises, and it is why breathing oxygen at normal pressure, from a tank or a home concentrator, does not do what a chamber does. Hard-shell chambers are rigid vessels, built from steel or acrylic, that reach 2.0 ATA and above. Clinical protocols in published HBOT studies commonly run at 2.0 ATA or higher.
Soft-shell chambers are inflatable units, common in gyms, spas, and homes, that typically operate near 1.3 ATA. That is below the pressures used in most published protocols, and it raises dissolved oxygen far less than a hard-shell chamber. Learn why your choice of chamber matters.
Monoplace chambers treat one person at a time. Multiplace chambers treat several people at once with staff inside, and are mostly found in hospital hyperbaric departments. The OxyRenew chamber is a monoplace unit in a private room.
Oxygen chamber, oxygen therapy chamber, hyperbaric oxygen chamber, and HBOT chamber all describe the same device: a pressurized enclosure for breathing concentrated oxygen. What separates one chamber from another is the pressure it can reach and how it is pressurized.
Some chambers are pressurized with oxygen itself. The OxyRenew chamber is pressurized with normal air while you breathe concentrated oxygen through a mask or cannula. An air-pressurized chamber allows electronic devices inside, so you can use your phone, tablet, or laptop during a session.
Air pressurization also allows air breaks: short periods of breathing normal air that reduce the risk of oxygen toxicity. Air breaks are what make longer 90 and 120 minute sessions practical. Learn more about oxygen breaks in HBOT.
