Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is a transformative procedure, but many patients in Beverly Hills and beyond find that post-surgical swelling can be a frustrating and lengthy part of recovery. Revision rhinoplasty, while meant to refine and perfect, can bring heightened concerns about swelling, especially if it was an issue during the initial surgery.
This is the story of how one patient approached that challenge. A 32-year-old Los Angeles professional was preparing for revision rhinoplasty after a primary surgery that left him with unexpectedly prolonged swelling. This time, he wanted to take a more active role in his recovery. Working with his Beverly Hills surgeon, he decided to add Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) sessions at OxyRenew to his pre and post-operative plan.
Having experienced significant and prolonged swelling after his primary rhinoplasty, this patient was understandably anxious about a repeat with his revision procedure. He consulted with the same Beverly Hills-based surgeon, known for their expertise in revision cases. His profession, heavily reliant on video conferencing, amplified his concern about facial swelling. Rather than simply hoping for a smoother experience, he and his surgeon reviewed every part of the recovery plan together, and HBOT came up as an option worth exploring.
After discussing it with his surgeon, the patient scheduled HBOT sessions at OxyRenew around his procedure date:
Before Surgery (2 Sessions): He completed two sessions in the days leading up to his revision rhinoplasty, a timing approach he and his surgeon chose together.
After Surgery (8 Sessions): With his surgeon's clearance, he returned 24 hours after his procedure and completed eight consecutive daily sessions.
Each session took place in our hard-shell 2.0 ATA chamber with a Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT) by his side the entire time. He described the sessions as the calmest part of his recovery routine: a quiet, private room where he could sit comfortably, watch Netflix, and let the time pass while his body rested.
The patient stayed consistent with the full plan, and that consistency is what he valued most. He told us the structure itself made a difference: instead of sitting at home worrying about swelling, he had a daily routine that gave him a sense of agency over his recovery. He felt rested through his first week, returned to video calls on a timeline he was comfortable with, and said he would build HBOT into his plan again without hesitation.
Every patient and every procedure is different, and no two recoveries follow the same timeline. We share this story not as a promised outcome, but as an example of how a patient and surgeon can build a recovery plan together that feels proactive rather than passive.
Why did his surgeon consider HBOT worth discussing? The therapy has been studied extensively in the context of post-surgical recovery. A systematic review of HBOT in facial plastic surgery by Meyer, Kandathil, Saltychev, Wei, and Most examined the published evidence on post-operative swelling and bruising. That body of work points to several mechanisms:
Oxygen Delivery: Breathing oxygen under pressure increases the amount dissolved in blood plasma, raising oxygen availability in tissues throughout the body.
Collagen Production and Angiogenesis: Oxygen is a key input for collagen synthesis and the formation of new blood vessels, processes central to how tissue repairs itself.
The Inflammatory Response: Studies have examined how elevated oxygen levels interact with the body's inflammatory response following tissue trauma.
If you are considering HBOT around a procedure, bring it up with your surgeon. They know your case and can tell you whether and when it fits your recovery plan.
If you are preparing for rhinoplasty or another procedure and want to take an active role in your recovery, we are happy to explain how our sessions work, what to expect, and how clients typically schedule around a procedure date.
