Swelling
Hyperbarics
HBOT

Swelling, or edema, is the body's physiological response to trauma. Whether from surgery, injury, or inflammation, the body rushes fluid and immune cells to the damaged area. However, this excessive fluid accumulation compresses healthy tissue, restricts blood flow, and causes pain, ultimately prolonging the recovery time.
For patients recovering from plastic surgery or acute injuries, managing this swelling is often the primary obstacle to seeing the final result.Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) offers a unique physiological mechanism to rapidly reduce this fluid buildup while simultaneously accelerating tissue repair.
HBOT fights swelling through a mechanism that seems contradictory at first: vasoconstriction. Under the high pressure of a hard-shell chamber, blood vessels constrict (narrow). In normal circumstances, narrowing blood vessels would reduce oxygen delivery, the exact opposite of what healing tissue needs.
However, because the patient is breathing pure oxygen at 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute), the blood plasma becomes supersaturated with oxygen. This allows the body to deliver massive amounts of oxygen to traumatized tissue despite the reduced blood flow. The result is a powerful dual effect: the vasoconstriction significantly prevents fluid leakage and reduces edema, while the plasma-dissolved oxygen fuels the repair process.
This mechanism highlights the critical difference between clinical hard-shell chambers and the soft-shell "mild" chambers often found in spas. Soft-shell chambers typically reach only 1.3 ATA. This lower pressure is generally insufficient to trigger the significant vasoconstriction needed to rapidly reduce acute swelling.
At OxyRenew, our chamber operates at 2.0 ATA. This is the pressure standard used in hospital settings to treat serious edema and crush injuries. For post-surgical recovery, this difference in pressure can mean shaving weeks off the visible healing timeline.
This therapy is particularly effective for post-operative recovery, widely used by patients of board-certified plastic surgeons like our founder, Dr. Neal Handel. By effectively managing the inflammatory phase, patients experience less pain and reduced bruising.
Your session at OxyRenew is supervised by a Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT) who ensures your safety and comfort. In our spacious hard-shell chamber, you can watch Netflix or simply rest while the therapy works to resolve your swelling from the inside out.
If you are preparing for surgery or dealing with persistent inflammation, book a session to start your recovery, or contact us to discuss your specific needs with our team.
