Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is characterized by an abrupt onset of hearing impairment, often developing over a few hours or days, and typically affecting a single ear. This rapid change in auditory perception can be a significant source of concern and can sometimes be accompanied by other symptoms like tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or dizziness. Sudden hearing changes warrant prompt medical attention, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been studied extensively in this context. Knowing what that work has found helps you have an informed conversation with your physician.
The precise cause of SSNHL is not always identifiable, but it is often linked to factors such as compromised blood flow to the cochlea (the inner ear's hearing organ), viral infections, inflammatory responses, or autoimmune conditions. The hair cells within the cochlea, which are vital for hearing, are highly metabolically active and extremely sensitive to reductions in oxygen supply (hypoxia) and inflammation. When these cells are stressed or damaged, hearing can be significantly impacted.
It’s important to recognize that sudden changes in hearing warrant prompt medical attention. While OxyRenew welcomes individuals to learn about and access HBOT, we consistently encourage an initial consultation with a physician or audiologist. This ensures a comprehensive diagnosis, helps to rule out or identify any other underlying medical conditions that might require specific treatment, and allows for an informed decision regarding the integration of HBOT into an overall care plan.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing oxygen within a pressurized environment. At OxyRenew, our advanced hard-shell chamber maintains a pressure of up to 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute). This significantly increases the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma, enabling a greater supply of oxygen to reach tissues throughout the body, including those of the inner ear that may have restricted blood flow. Here is why oxygen delivery receives so much attention in studies of SSNHL:
Enhanced Oxygen Delivery to Inner Ear Tissues: The inner ear's high metabolic rate and unique blood supply make it vulnerable to hypoxia. HBOT effectively bypasses limitations in hemoglobin-based oxygen delivery by dissolving oxygen directly into the plasma, thus delivering vital oxygen to compromised cochlear tissues.
Inflammation and Swelling: HBOT has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in studies. Inflammation and edema within the confined space of the cochlea are among the processes thought to contribute to SSNHL, which is why this property draws attention in the literature.
Hair Cell Metabolism: The hair cells of the cochlea are highly metabolically active and sensitive to oxygen supply. One hypothesis is that an oxygen-rich environment may support the metabolic function of stressed hair cells, an idea still being tested.
Synergistic Effects with Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids are a cornerstone of conventional SSNHL treatment, primarily for their anti-inflammatory action. Research suggests a synergistic relationship between HBOT and steroid therapy. A comprehensive meta-analysis published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery involving over 2,400 patients found that adding HBOT to standard medical therapy (which includes corticosteroids) significantly improved both complete and any hearing recovery rates compared to medical therapy alone. The authors suggest the increased oxygen may improve steroid penetration into inner ear tissues. Whether and how this applies to an individual case is a conversation for your treating physician.
In the context of SSNHL, initiating therapeutic interventions promptly is generally associated with improved prognoses. The early phase following the onset of hearing loss is often considered a critical period for leveraging treatments like HBOT. However, this does not preclude the potential for benefit in individuals who are further along in their timeline.
While early intervention is encouraged, individuals at various stages of their hearing loss journey have explored HBOT. If you have been experiencing symptoms for some time, speak with your hearing healthcare provider about whether HBOT makes sense for you. Our technicians are happy to explain how our sessions work so you and your provider can decide together. Our aim is to provide clear information and support your informed choices.
Choosing a provider for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is an important decision. At OxyRenew, we are dedicated to offering a therapeutic environment that is both scientifically grounded and patient-focused.
Advanced 2.0 ATA Hard-Shell Chamber: We utilize a hard-shell hyperbaric chamber capable of achieving 2.0 ATA, a pressure commonly used in published HBOT trials.
Personalized Session Planning: We collaborate with our clients, and often their referring physicians or audiologists, to develop session plans that align with individual needs and wellness goals.
Experienced Certified Hyperbaric Technicians: Our CHTs are committed to ensuring your safety, comfort, and understanding throughout the HBOT process, providing expert supervision and answering any questions you may have.
Empowering Patients Through Information: We believe that an informed patient is an empowered one. We strive to provide comprehensive information about HBOT, its mechanisms, and the evidence surrounding it, so you can make decisions together with your care team.
If you are navigating the challenges of sudden hearing loss, a thorough medical evaluation is the critical first step for diagnosis and a primary treatment plan. From there, learning how HBOT has been evaluated can help you and your physician decide whether it has a place alongside that plan.
We invite you to contact OxyRenew to speak with one of our Certified Hyperbaric Technicians. We can discuss the principles of HBOT, how our sessions work, and address your specific questions. If you are ready to explore this option further, you may also book your initial session online.
