The brain consumes about 20% of the body's oxygen supply despite making up only 2% of its weight. This disproportionate demand makes the brain highly sensitive to oxygen availability. Neurotransmitter synthesis, energy production, and cellular metabolism all depend on oxygen supply. Whether increasing oxygen delivery changes neuronal function is under study.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) delivers oxygen at elevated pressure, dissolving it directly into blood plasma and increasing delivery to oxygen-hungry tissues, including the brain. At OxyRenew, some clients use their session time as a focused work environment, exploring whether enhanced oxygenation has any effect on their focus.
Our hard-shell chamber operates at 2.0 ATA, double normal atmospheric pressure. At this pressure, several mechanisms have been studied.
One area under study is whether HBOT influences brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein involved in neuroplasticity. BDNF supports the brain's ability to form new connections. An effect of HBOT on learning, memory, or cognitive flexibility has not been established. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is another proposed mechanism affecting long-term oxygen and nutrient delivery to neurons.
Inflammation in the brain is another area under study, including whether HBOT changes pro-inflammatory cytokine levels or immune activity. At the cellular level, HBOT has been studied for effects on mitochondrial function and ATP production, the energy neurons use for synaptic transmission and processing.
The idea of working during an HBOT session is unconventional. Whether elevated oxygen in blood plasma affects alertness or mental fatigue is under study.
Our chamber at OxyRenew accommodates this. Clients can sit upright, use laptops and smartphones, and work in a private, quiet environment. Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, enough time to complete focused work. Most electronic devices are compatible with the hyperbaric environment; check with our staff if you have questions about specific equipment.
HBOT is not a cognitive enhancer. Diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management remain foundational for brain health. What HBOT offers is a way to increase oxygen delivery to the brain; whether that supports focus, memory, and mental clarity is under study.
