Several public figures have said they use hyperbaric chambers as part of their recovery routines. Professional athletes and entertainers are among them, and tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson posted that he moved his office into a hyperbaric chamber. None of the people mentioned in this post is affiliated with OxyRenew.
Not all hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the same. Many celebrities use portable, soft-shell hyperbaric chambers, which typically operate at mild pressures (around 1.3 to 1.5 ATA), for convenience. These chambers are limited in the oxygen dose they deliver. A hard-shell chamber, like the 2.0 ATA chamber at OxyRenew Los Angeles, operates at a higher pressure and delivers a higher oxygen dose.
Soft-shell hyperbaric chambers are used by some athletes and entertainers because they allow daily sessions at home or on the road. LeBron James, for example, was filmed using a soft hyperbaric chamber during the 2017 NBA playoffs.
These chambers typically max out around 1.3 to 1.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA), with an oxygen concentrator providing about 24 to 40% oxygen. This is only a modest boost compared to normal air at sea level (1 ATA, 21% oxygen). They deliver a lower oxygen dose than a 2.0 ATA hard-shell chamber.
Pressure sets the oxygen dose. Under Henry's law , substantially more oxygen dissolves in plasma at 2.0 ATA than at normal pressure, which is thought to improve oxygen delivery to areas with restricted blood flow.
Tissue Repair: Fibroblast and osteoblast activity is oxygen-dependent, and the effect of higher oxygen levels on collagen production is under study.
Blood Vessel Growth: Angiogenesis (new capillary formation) is one of the proposed mechanisms of HBOT and is under study.
Inflammatory Response: HBOT is proposed to modulate inflammatory responses, including pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β) and tissue edema. This is under study.
Brain: The brain is one area under study for the effects of elevated oxygen levels.
Many celebrities use soft-shell HBOT for convenience. The chamber at OxyRenew Los Angeles operates at 2.0 ATA, the pressure used in many published trials.
Higher pressure than soft-shell chambers (2.0 ATA versus about 1.3 ATA).
