The energy that powers your daily activities originates in your cells. Mitochondria, the organelles responsible for generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), determine how much usable energy your body has available. When mitochondrial function declines due to stress, insufficient sleep, environmental factors, or aging, the result is persistent tiredness, mental fog, and reduced physical capacity.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been studied for effects at this cellular level. By breathing concentrated oxygen at elevated pressure, the blood plasma carries more dissolved oxygen, which reaches mitochondria throughout the body. Whether this supports the biochemical processes that produce ATP is under study.
Oxygen is essential for the electron transport chain, the final stage of ATP synthesis in mitochondria. When oxygen availability increases, these energy-generating pathways can function more efficiently. Schottlender et al. (2021) reviewed evidence on HBOT and mitochondrial function.
Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress also drain energy reserves. The body diverts resources to managing these conditions rather than fueling normal function. HBOT has been studied for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that could reduce this metabolic burden. The hypothesis is that better mitochondrial function leaves more energy available for daily activity.
Stimulants provide temporary alertness followed by a crash. They mask fatigue without addressing its source. The question studied with HBOT is whether it supports the systems that generate energy in the first place.
HBOT is not a replacement for sleep, nutrition, or exercise. These fundamentals still determine baseline energy levels. What HBOT adds is more oxygen delivered at the cellular level; whether that changes energy levels is an open question.
Our hard-shell chamber operates at 2.0 ATA, a pressure commonly used in published trials. We use protocols that include oxygen breaks to optimize benefit while managing oxidative stress. Sessions are private, supervised by a Certified Hyperbaric Technician, and located in West Hollywood.
